Aim: Obesity is associated with activation of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)/ ribosomal S6 kinase (S6K) signaling pathway that promotes cardiac hypertrophy, insulin resistance, endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress. Although activation of mTOR/S6K has a harmful effect, simultaneously it represents adaptive metabolic response that protects cells from excessive nutrient intake. Insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF1) exerts pleiotropic action on heart promoting vasorela...

Propylthiouracil (PTU) sometimes induces autoimmune syndromes, such as PTU–induced lupus or vasculitis. Here we present hands and feet vasculitis-like skin changes observed several days after PTU introduction in a patient who suffered from serious diffuse toxic goiter. Because of segmental distribution, normal liver function test, and no signs of clinical deterioration, it was decided to continue PTU management and observe the patient. Primarily maculopapular rash became ...

One of the main causes of protracted, severe hypocalcemia after parathyroidectomy is hungry bone syndrome (HBS). We report the case of a 40-year-old man who was first admitted to the Endocrinology department of Zemun Clinical Hospital (ZCH) in order to perform a workup for hypercalcemia. Further laboratory and imaging diagnostics indicated that a giant parathyroid adenoma, measuring approximately 6 cm in size, was the cause of the hypercalcaemia. An endocrine surgeon at the Cl...
